Sunday Roast in Leeds

This is Yorkshire pudding's home county, and Leeds takes Sunday lunch seriously — from a farm-named topside in a yard off Briggate to a steakhouse sharing board in the Victoria Quarter. Below are eight pubs and restaurants whose Sunday offer we could check against their own published menus, with prices, serving times and the details that actually decide where you book.

Sunday Roast Guide — Leeds

The short version. Adult roasts on the menus we checked run from £11 to £27, and most kitchens stop serving by 5pm or 6pm — only The Square & Compass runs to 7.30pm. The cheapest full roast in the city is at Kirkstall Bridge Inn, where every meat roast costs £17. The Brunswick is the one to book first: by its own account it sells out most weeks, and it only takes bookings through its online form.

Two well-known Leeds roast pubs, Shears Yard and The Midnight Bell, are not in this first version for one reason: their websites do not publish a priced Sunday menu we could check. They will be added when they do.

Best for…

Best value

Kirkstall Bridge Inn. Every meat roast is £17, the beef-and-pork duo is £20, and if you mainly come for the trimmings there is a roast of sides alone for £11. Nothing else we checked in Leeds gets close.

Best for a late Sunday

The Square & Compass. Its Sunday menu runs to 7.30pm, a good two and a half hours after several city-centre kitchens have finished. Handy after a match, a market or a slow morning.

Best for vegetarians and vegans

The Brunswick — its own website quotes Leeds Confidential calling its vegetarian or vegan roast arguably the best in the city. Banyan also deserves a mention for pricing its vegan version (£18.50) separately rather than as an afterthought.

Best for dogs

The Square & Compass again: it publishes a dedicated "Four Legged Friend Menu", which is about as clear a dog-friendly policy as a pub can give. Most other pubs here do not state a policy on their sites, so check before you go.

Best for sharing

The Cut & Craft's Sunday Sharing Roast (£55 for two) pairs its 60-day aged sirloin with half a chicken and pork belly. The Whitehall's four-meat platter (£59.95 for two) runs it close.

Best for a long, lazy lunch

Banyan's bottomless roast (£41.95) adds two hours of unlimited Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, gravy and drinks to your plate — the only format of its kind among the pubs we checked.

The pubs, one by one

Whitelock's Ale House

Turk's Head Yard, off Briggate · City Centre

Whitelock's names its farms on the menu, which is rarer than it should be: the beef topside (£20.95, served pink) and pork loin (£18.95) come from Yafforth Hill Farm, the leg of lamb (£22.95) from Bridge Grange Farm. Everything arrives with a Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and gravy, and the vegetarian nut & herb loaf (£17.95) can be made vegan. Add cauliflower cheese for £6 if you are doing Sunday properly.

Kirkstall Bridge Inn

12 Bridge Road · Kirkstall

Kirkstall Brewery's riverside pub keeps Sunday simple and keenly priced: beef rump, slow-roast pork collar or chicken breast, all £17, all with roast potatoes, maple-roasted carrots and parsnips, greens, red cabbage, stuffing, gravy and a homemade Yorkshire pudding. Vegetarians get a Wellington (£15), vegans a "vegan turkey" (£15), and there are children's portions. Roasts run 12–5pm and the pub recommends booking.

The Square & Compass

Rigton Hill, North Rigton · north of Leeds

A country pub in the village of North Rigton, and the most generous plate in this guide: roast potatoes and gravy are unlimited, and the £27 Three Meat Medley stacks hand-carved beef, pork and chicken with two Yorkshire puddings and crackling. Single roasts run from the puy lentil & cashew nut roast (£17, with vegan sage gravy) to pink leg of lamb (£24.50). Most of the sourcing is Yorkshire — butchery from Sykes House Farm, pork from West Moor Farm — and the Sunday kitchen is open until 7.30pm.

The Cut & Craft

23 King Edward Street · Victoria Quarter

A steakhouse doing Sunday on its own terms: house-butchered meats, a sirloin aged for at least 60 days (£26), and unlimited refills of bone-marrow gravy. The sharing roast (£55 for two) adds roasted half chicken and pork belly to the sirloin. Roasts are served 12–6pm "whilst availability lasts", and one practical note for families: the menu sets the last booking for children aged ten and under at 4.45pm.

Banyan

2 City Square · City Centre

Part cocktail bar, part roast house, right on City Square. The standard plate — 40-day aged rump of Black Angus beef (£22.95), herb-roasted chicken (£20.95) or a veggie mince, onion and ale pie (£20.95) — comes with honey-roast carrots and parsnips, spiced red cabbage and bottomless gravy. Sharing boards for two run £38.95–£43.95, and the bottomless version (£41.95) stretches the Yorkshires, roasties, gravy and drinks over two hours.

The Whitehall Restaurant & Bar

West Point, Wellington Street · City Centre

The most ambitious menu in the guide, from its published Sunday sample menu: a rump cap of beef salt-aged for 36 days, pork belly braised for 24 hours in cider and herbs, and a lamb leg in garlic and herb butter (from £19.95; lamb £24.95). Groups can go further — a roast platter of all four meats for two at £59.95, or sharing cuts up to a 1kg tomahawk. Sample-menu prices can differ on the day, so treat them as a guide.

The Brunswick

82 North Street · City Centre

A neighbourhood pub opposite Lovell Park, serving seasonal food from local suppliers since 2015. It does not publish a priced Sunday menu online — what it does publish is a warning: book ahead for the roast because it sells out most weeks, bookings are taken through its online form only (not by phone or email), and it helps to pre-order dishes in the booking comments. Its site also quotes Leeds Confidential calling its vegetarian or vegan roast arguably the best in Leeds.

The Highland Laddie

36–38 Cavendish Street · Burley

"A drinkers pub with a dining room", in its own words — a traditional free house in Burley where Sunday works to a strict clock: food is served 12–5pm, then the kitchen closes while the bar carries on to 10pm with snacks all day. Its website does not publish a priced Sunday menu, so this is one to check on the pub's social channels or at the bar before you set off.

Planning a Sunday roast in Leeds

Book earlier than feels necessary. Autumn and winter Sundays are the peak of roast season, and the popular rooms fill days ahead. The Brunswick only takes bookings through its website form and says it sells out most weeks; Kirkstall Bridge recommends booking outright; The Cut & Craft prints "limited availability" on its menu. If you are deciding on Sunday morning, the later kitchens — The Square & Compass until 7.30pm — are your safety net.

Mind the serving window. A Leeds Sunday kitchen typically runs from noon to somewhere between 5pm and 6pm. In this guide the finishes we could verify are 5pm (Kirkstall Bridge Inn, The Highland Laddie), 6pm (The Cut & Craft) and 7.30pm (The Square & Compass). Arriving at 4.45pm for a first sitting is fine; arriving at 4.45pm hoping for a roast at a 5pm kitchen is a gamble.

What a proper roast includes. Across the menus we checked, the standard plate is roast meat, roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables — often including red cabbage, carrots and parsnips — stuffing and gravy. Cauliflower cheese is almost always an extra (£4.50–£6 at these pubs), as are pigs in blankets. Unlimited elements are a real dividing line: gravy is bottomless at Banyan and The Cut & Craft, and both gravy and roast potatoes are unlimited at The Square & Compass.

Questions people ask about Sunday roasts in Leeds

How much does a Sunday roast cost in Leeds?

On the menus we checked on 19 October 2026, an adult roast costs between £11 and £27. The £11 option is a trimmings-only roast at Kirkstall Bridge Inn; its meat roasts are all £17, the flat-rate end of the city. At the top end, The Cut & Craft's 60-day aged sirloin is £26 and The Square & Compass's three-meat medley is £27.

Do I need to book a Sunday roast in Leeds?

For the best-known pubs, yes. The Brunswick says it sells out most weeks and only accepts bookings through its online form. Kirkstall Bridge Inn recommends booking, and The Cut & Craft serves its roast strictly while availability lasts. Walk-ins stand the best chance early (just after 12pm) or at the pubs serving later into the evening.

Where can I get a vegan Sunday roast in Leeds?

Several pubs here publish one rather than improvising it: The Brunswick (praised on its own site as arguably the city's best vegetarian or vegan roast), Kirkstall Bridge Inn (a vegan "turkey" and a trimmings roast, both £15 or less), The Square & Compass (puy lentil and cashew nut roast with vegan sage gravy, £17), Banyan (a vegan version of its veggie pie at £18.50) and Whitelock's (nut & herb loaf with a vegan option, £17.95).

Which Leeds Sunday roast pubs are dog-friendly?

The Square & Compass is the clearest case — it publishes a menu written for dogs. Most other pubs in this guide do not state a dog policy on their websites, which usually means dogs are fine in the bar but not the dining room; a quick message before you book is the safe move.

What time do pubs stop serving Sunday roast in Leeds?

Earlier than many people expect. Of the kitchens whose Sunday hours we could verify, two finish at 5pm, one at 6pm, and the latest — The Square & Compass in North Rigton — runs to 7.30pm. If Sunday lunch is drifting towards Sunday dinner, start there.

Which of these pubs is closest to Leeds Station?

Banyan, on City Square directly in front of the station, and The Whitehall, a short walk west along Wellington Street. Both are in the city centre proper, unlike the North Rigton and Kirkstall options, which are trips out.

How this guide is put together

Sunday Roast Guide is a curated guide, not a review site. We have not eaten at these pubs and we do not score their cooking. Every price, serving time and menu detail on this page comes from the pub's or restaurant's own website or published menu, or from public listings information, and we say so where a pub does not publish a detail — two pubs list no prices at all, and we would rather show that gap than fill it with a guess. Menus in Leeds change with the seasons (several of these are explicitly winter menus), so treat figures as checked on the date below, not as promises. Pubs that spot an error in their own entry are welcome to get in touch and have it corrected.
